Field Testing by Power: Tires, psi, PB's

hey, I just wanted to share an experience I had by using power.

Y'know all that tire pressure stuff I was doing a month or two ago???

Well, I figured I'd give what I learned from that exercise, i.e, that 140 psi tire pressure more than likely leads to lower rolling resistance for the conditions tested , a go "in the real world" and promptly set a PB time record on my local 20MP hill...all this despite having lower power and higher mass than I've had in the past.

Watts, Aerodynamics, and Tire Choice

Did you know that the tire you choose to put on your Zipp clincher could be costing you as much as (or, even more than) 10 aerodynamic watts at 30 mph?

Pretty crazy, but, it's true.  Ever since I first started testing wheels in wind tunnels almost 15 years ago, it was clear that the tire you chose to put on your expensive wheel could make more difference than the wheel you were testing.

Here's what happens when folks get real enamored with hangin' the backside of their butt over the BB:

ibike vs srm: hill regression data

Well, it may not be the absolute best way to present these data, but it is what it is.  For the last couple months I've tracked W/kg and my stopwatch based elapsed time for both the SRM and the ibike for my short "vo2" hill that I ride up/down during my lunch hour.

ibike typical ride

Almost another month down using the ibike gen 3 / ibike gen III power meter in conjunction with my SRM pro.  Here is the ibike software provided "power meter comparison" of the two devices after a ride I did last weekend...this was the longest ride I've done in awhile!
